Richard Hastings
Head of Technology sector
Partner, Commercial Technology & Intellectual Property
Richard Hastings is the head of our Commercial Department and specialises in Commercial Technology and Intellectual property. He has previously held senior positions as General Counsel at Yahoo! Europe and for several Telco's.
Richard advises all sorts of companies from small entrepreneurs to large blue chip multi nationals, in all areas of commercial and corporate work. Richard also heads up the firm's Intellectual Property team and has particular expertise in identifying and assisting in the protection of technology and intellectual property as a valuable asset.
Richard has provided legal support to a number of companies including IDT Telecom, Novartis, Nuffield Health, Opodo and various VOIP technology companies. He recently led the sale of Toucan Telcon for IDT to Pipex (£25m) and arranged the set-up of a joint venture in India for Opodo Travel.
Richard regularly holds seminars on IPR, Data Protection and commercial technology matters.

Caroline Armitage
Head of Manufacturing & Logistics sector and Corporate Commercial Partner at Thomas Eggar LLP
After taking a degree in Law at Cambridge University, Caroline qualified as a solicitor in 1984 having trained with Allen and Overy. After a further two years in London she joined Burstows solicitors in Sussex, becoming a Partner in 1990. Burstows subsequently became a part of asb law, and Caroline continued as a Partner heading up asb law's commercial services division and group until 2004. She joined Thomas Eggar in 2005.
Caroline is a corporate finance specialist acting for owner managed businesses, venture capital backed teams and listed companies, across a broad range of industries. She specialises in mergers, acquisitions, disposals and corporate structuring, including shareholder dispute situations. She has particular experience in the manufacturing & logistics sector – freight forwarding and general sales agency agreements, technology and the travel and aviation sector.
Her work has included acting on a string of acquisitions for a FTSE 250 listed company in the travel sector, including US cross border acquisitions, and acting on the purchase of a manufacturing business from an AIM listed company, including financing by way of loan and discounting facilities. Also, corporate exit structuring to allow the staged disposal by one of two joint shareholders to the remaining shareholder of a 50% shareholding, and acting on the MBO and structuring of a computer services company and 4 years later on its sale to a German listed company

Paul Barlow

With a 27 year career in marketing, Paul has a breadth of marketing experience rarely found. His expertise in strategic and marketing communications, and branding has helped numerous clients in industrial manufacturing and advanced technology market sectors achieve some remarkable results.
Under his leadership, Vertical has achieved an outstanding track record of winning and retaining clients in the electronics, electrical, security, industrial automation, telecom and ‘green’ manufacturing market sectors. In fact, some clients have been with the agency for more than 16 years.
In 2009 Vertical was nominated into the <Who's Who of Britain's Business Elite – Fastest Growing Companies 2009’ as defined by the percentage change in Shareholders' Funds, i.e. the true increase in the value of a business.

Mike Mason
Director and Head of Forensic Accounting at BDO Stoy Hayward LLP
Mike has a wealth of experience, carrying out valuations and forensic accountancy assignments for over 16 years. Mike has also been the expert accountant in over 700 cases, which have been either for litigation, arbitrations, mediations and expert determinations.
He has given evidence on numerous occasions in the High Court, the Technology and Construction Court, the County Court, the Crown Court, the Family Court and at Military Courts Martial. He has also assisted in arbitrations and mediations.
Mike is also a qualified barrister. On sabbatical from BDO he completed a pupillage with Pump Court Chambers undertaking civil, criminal, and family work.
